The Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) is the essential half reaction for the electrolysis of water which stipulates the long term production of hydrogen. Hydrogen generation through water splitting eliminates the need for the dependence of fossil fuels. In this context, the perovskite oxides are found to be the affordable alternative to noble metal catalysts due to their nature of abundance, good electronic states and crystal structures. Although YFeO; has been investigated as a photocathode for HER, undoped YFeO3 nanomaterial has not yet been explored as an electrocatalyst for HER. This study focuses on the synthesis of YFeO; through green combustion route to analyze its potentiality as an efficient electrocatalyst for HER in alkaline medium. The structure and morphology of the as-synthesized YFeO; was confirmed by XRD, FTIR, XPS, FE-SEM and TEM. Electrochemical analysis of bare and YFeO3 coated carbon sheets indicated that the latter exhib-ited higher HER activity. YFeO; electrode yielded an overpotential of 262 mV at 10 mA cm & sup2; and a tafel slope of 107mV dec & sup1; revealing good HER activity compared with the bare carbon sheet. The EIS plot of YFeO; electrode showed lower charge transfer resistance than the bare carbon sheet, facilitating faster electron transfer which is favorable for HER. The electrode also continued to be stable throughout 10 h of chronoamperometry with negligible decay in the performance. This confirms the efficiency of green combusted YFeO; as an efficient electrocatalyst for HER.
