• Novel MgO nanosponge with unique interconnected morphology was synthesized. • Prepared MgO using a simple, eco‑friendly tragacanth‑gum soft‑templating route. • Shows 3D network of ligaments sized 35–105 nm (average ≈ 60.4 nm). • Exhibits high adsorption capacity of 1201.24 mg/g for crystal violet dye. • Retains 98.5% efficiency after 10 adsorption–desorption cycles.
