• Synthesis of ZZ-NaX zeolite from fly ash by metal impurities retention strategy. • Metal impurities (Fe3+, Ti4+, Ca2+) could enter zeolite and occupy counter-cation sites. • Molecular dynamics showed impurities could enhance electrostatic field and basicity. • ZZ-NaX zeolite had high CO2 selectivity adsorption capacity in CO2/CO/N2 atmospheres.
