• Common PAM and CaCl2-doped PAM hydrogels are experimentally prepared. • A novel thermo-mass-electric coupled mathematical model is developed. • Indoor and outdoor PV cooling experiments are both conducted. • Thermal managing strategy based on CaCl2-doped PAM gel for PV cells is evaluated.
