• The BEIP tested foster care as an alternative to institutional care • Children in usual care showed faster telomere decline than foster care from 12 to 22 • Early foster care may help buffer long-term impacts of adversity on cellular aging • Rates of telomere shortening were comparable between sexes from ages 12 to 22 • Telomere decline rate did not predict cardiometabolic health outcomes at age 22
