• A universal excitation threshold governing PL decay dynamics in CaGa2S4:Eu2+ is identified • High excitation densities activate additional non-radiative relaxation channels • Time-resolved spectroscopy reveals excitation-induced modification of decay kinetics • PL efficiency behavior correlates with saturation and non-radiative losses • The results are relevant for high-power photonic and laser-driven phosphor applications
