• Successfully synthesized thermo responsive PNIPAAm-TiO2 hybrid microgel lubricants. • Hybrid additives significantly reduce friction and wear across swollen and collapsed states. • TiO2 functionalization enhances tribofilm stability and improves wear resistance. • Tribological performance correlates with depth dependent Ti+ and CN- distribution and mechanical heterogeneity.
