• Phosphonate spacer regulates polyamide 66 chain topology. • Temperature-responsive entanglement balances strength and flow. • Intrinsic fire safety is improved without losing spinnability. • The best copolymer reaches 98.6 MPa tensile strength. • Charring and radical quenching jointly suppress heat release.
