This paper presents combined texture, trace elements, and sulfur isotopes of five paragenetic pyrites (Py1 to Py5) to fingerprint the hydrothermal evolution (Stage Ito Stage V) of the Meiling deposit, NW China. Py1 grains with distinct core-rim zonation textures and low Co/Ni ratios are interpreted as pre-ore syn-sedimentary origin and then modified by late hydrothermal process. High contents of Ni, Co, As, Ti, Te, and V in Py2 indicate relatively moderate-high temperature and reducing conditions in hydrofracturing during decreasing fluid pressure. Fluid composition, temperature, and fluid-rock reactions are the main factors controlling the incorporation of trace elements in Py3 and Py4, and the ore-forming fluids were enriched by Cu and Zn in Stage III and Stage IV, respectively. Specifically, later fine-grained Py3-F and Py4-F are more enriched in Cu, Zn, and Au, which is interpreted as both boiling and cooling processes caused by decrease of pressure and temperature in a fluid saturated with respect to metal elements. An oxidizing state in open spaces and mixture of fluids facilitated the precipitation of Py5 in the late stage V. We propose that pyrite grains characterized by high Cu and Zn contents and negative delta 34S values can discriminate economic Cu-rich and Zn-rich veins from barren veins to ascertain potential metal endowment in epithermal deposits.
