Abstract

• Accelerated sea-ice melt is enabling the opening of new Arctic shipping corridors. • The focus is on the Northern Sea Route (NSR), the Northwest Passage (NWP), and the Transpolar Sea Route (TSR). • Route viability is evaluated using a Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) framework. • Our analysis shows that NSR and TSR are susceptible to fluctuations in economic and geopolitical concerns. • Non-economic considerations also strongly influence decisions on Arctic route planning.
