• Variability in suicidal ideation (SI) may indicate high risk of suicide attempt (SA) • We tested this association in a longitudinal population sample over 12 months • Short-term variability and trajectories inadequately predicted SA and self-harm • Physical health, mental health and social connection linked to poorer trajectories • Findings suggest that suicidal ideation variability is a poor marker for suicide risk
