Background and Aim Our aim in this study was to compare the feeding patterns of infants with and without a history of hospitalization in the NICU within the first 6 months and to investigate the effect of hospitalization in the NICU on exclusive breastfeeding during the first 6 months of life.Method Our study was planned prospectively and observationally. The infants who were born in our hospital and treated in the NICU were named Group I, and infants who did not have any health problems and were discharged with their mothers were named Group II. A total of 158 infants were included in our study. The average gestational age of the infants was 38 weeks, and their birth weights were 3185 g. 44.6% of the infants included in the study were exclusively breastfed during the first six months. 39.2% of the infants in Group I and 49.4% of those in Group II were exclusively breastfed; this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.201). The rates of exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6 months were found to be lower in infants born by C/S with a history of maternal smoking and late preterm infants.Conclusion The study demonstrated that NICU admissions were not effective in promoting exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months. The fact that this study was a single-center study and that the infants who were admitted NICU, were monitored in the mother-baby hotel before discharge may have significantly impacted the results of our study.
