• Mountain barriers determine the maximum relative height of windward side dunes. • Ridge height, transverse distance, and longitudinal distance are the three primary factors controlling maximum relative dune height. • The maximum relative height of the dunes exhibited a linear relationship with the mountain ridge height, conformed to the characteristics of the probability density function of the normal distribution with the transverse distance, and showed a negative exponential or Burr distribution relationship with the longitudinal distance. • The spatial range of mountain barrier effects on dune height is a function of transverse distance and ridge height.
