• Molybdenum significantly influences the phase composition and microstructure of AlCrFe2Ni2Mox alloys. • Corrosion of AlCrFe2Ni2Mox alloys proceeds by sequential dissolution of the BCC-B2 phase followed by FCC or σ phase. • Degradation of AlCrFe2Ni2Mox alloys at 50 °C is accelerated and accompanied by redeposition of Mo-containing species. • The Mo-rich layer is unprotective and forms as a result of electrostatic attraction between the alloy surface and Mo-containing ions.
