• The dependency of scientific research on academic social capital is increasing, and the social capital is progressively being concentrated among top-tier scientists. • Early-career researchers can gain access to higher-level academic social capital, but the disruptiveness of collaborations between new and established researchers falls below average. • Newcomer researchers tend to outperform their senior collaborative partners in innovative disruptiveness, but they have to balance between leveraging social resources and disruptive innovation. • Junior researchers’ adherence to authoritative collaborators might be one of the key determinants in the decline of disruptive innovation.
