The special issue Mothering (in) African Diasporas: Shaping the Present, Making the Future examines reproductive and parenting trajectories within and beyond the African continent, shedding light on the processual, situated, and relational dimensions of both becoming and acting as mothers in global African diasporas. By attending to the shifting social, economic, and political conditions in which diasporic lives unfold, the collected articles explore the strong connections between mothering experiences and different migration and mobility patterns; gender inequities, intersectional disparities, and racialized forms of discrimination in reproductive and parenting trajectories; diasporic parenting and non-parenting as sites of reproductive and citizenship rights, and of cultural, affective, and emotional investments in the "here" and "there." Overall, mothering emerges as a crucial lens through which to observe racialized and gendered social hierarchies, but also individual and collective positions, struggles, and imaginaries of the past, engagements with the present, and socio-political aspirations for the future.
