• Tested whether social connection mediates the relationship between RNT and affective outcomes. • Social connectedness was not a mediator after controlling for baseline levels of outcomes. • Social connectedness longitudinally predicted anhedonic depression (but not anxious arousal) • This finding persisted after controlling for baseline anhedonia and general distress. • Treatments for anhedonic depression symptoms should focus on enhancing social connection.
