Abstract

• Asp expression in symmetrically dividing neuroepithelial cells (NECs) can rescue optic lobe brain size and morphology defects in asp mutants. • Asp expression in asymmetrically dividing neuroblasts cannot rescue optic lobe brain size or morphology defects in asp mutants. • Expression of Asp in NECs is only required during the second neurogenesis phase to promote proper adult brain development. • The human ortholog of Asp (ASPM) can significantly rescue fly optic lobe brain growth defects, suggesting conservation of function between Drosophila and humans. • Asp’s nuclear localization is not required for brain growth and development.
