• Comprehensive three-level meta-analysis of 98 studies (N = 272,491) revealed a significant positive association between child maltreatment and problematic technology use (r = 0.200, 95% CI [0.175, 0.224]). • Substantial heterogeneity was observed ( I2 = 97.7%), with within-study variance (68.83%) exceeding between-study variance (30.14%), indicating distinct patterns across maltreatment and technology use subtypes. • Emotional abuse demonstrated the strongest predictive association with problematic technology use (r = 0.233), followed by physical neglect (r = 0.216), supporting the dimensional model of adversity and psychopathology. • Cross-national moderation analyses revealed that income inequality, cultural values, and gender composition significantly moderated the maltreatment-technology relationship. • Findings support trauma-informed intervention approaches and highlight the necessity of addressing socioeconomic inequality as both a social justice and public health imperative in preventing problematic technology use.
