The rodent head-direction system encodes a 1D variable – the orientation of the head in the horizontal plane – that uses vestibular signals stabilized by multimodal sensory inputs. This head-direction signal is transmitted to the cortex through a thalamocortical loop between the anterodorsal thalamus and the postsubiculum. This circuit resembles primary cortical systems: it features a strong thalamic driver input, broad cortical tuning to head direction, and a transformation of neural tuning along the thalamocortical pathway. Beyond broadcasting the head-direction signal to higher-order cortical areas, this thalamocortical system may also support memory-related information processing during both wakefulness and sleep.
