The role of MBD3 in cell biology and disease: Recent advances and future directions

MBD3 (mBD3, methyl-CpG binding domain protein 3) is a key epigenetic regulator that is involved in a wide range of biological processes including gene expression regulation, cell differentiation, and development. With the realization of the importance of epigenetics in biological systems, the role of MBD3 in normal and abnormal conditions, especially with respect to cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, has received increasing attention. MBD3 affects the mechanisms of essential processes by regulating the binding of transcription factors and chromatin remodeling. Here we review the structure and functions of MBD3, its role in cell biology, the mechanisms of its action in different diseases, and future research directions, with the aim of increasing our understanding of MBD3 and its potential in clinical applications.
