• This study provides a systematic elucidation of the association between PTSD and the gut microbiota. • It delineates the mechanistic interactions between PTSD and the gut microbiota, inspecially the role of SCFAs. • The study proposes multiple microbiota-targeted strategies, highlighting their potential as novel therapeutic interventions.
