This study investigates the physicochemical, rheological, thermal, and tribological behavior of engine oil blended with coconut oil (CO) and palm oil (PO) at 30% and 50% ratios, aiming to develop bio-based lubricants for hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2ICEs). Thermal stability analysis using TGA revealed that the EC2 blend (50% CO) exhibited the highest degradation onset temperature of 240.3 °C, an 18.7% improvement over pure engine oil (202.4 °C). This enhanced thermal resistance delays oxidative breakdown at elevated combustion temperatures, enabling the lubricant to maintain viscosity and film integrity. As a result, EC2 achieved a 12.5% reduction in coefficient of friction under high load (700 N), demonstrating the direct benefit of thermal stability on tribological performance. Similarly, rheological analysis showed that EC1 (30% CO) and EP1 (30% PO) had the highest viscosity indices (105 and 104), ensuring stable lubrication across a wide temperature range. Tribological tests confirmed that EP1, with its long-chain fatty acid contribution, achieved a 31.87% and 24.44% reduction in wear scar diameter under variable load and speeds. These results show the potential of optimized CO and PO bio-lubricants to extend component life and promote sustainable hydrogen ICE applications, providing a foundation for next-generation clean energy lubricants.
