This essay argues that the conservative Anglican social critque that T.S. Eliot developed after his conversion to Anglo-Catholicism circa 1927 was of a piece with his earlier literary criticism and theory as collected in The Sacred Wood (1920). In doing so, the essay contextualises both the literary criticism and the socal critique, offering a new account of how Eliot's early literary criticism was related to the analytic philosophy being developed by George Moore, Bertrand Russell and Ludwig Wittgenstein around the same time.
