Abstract
In the preceding chapter, I argued that there are three groups of studies that provide an environmental analogue to the behavioral genetic twin, family, and adoption studies that have proved so persuasive in demonstrating a role for genetic factors in most major types of psychiatric disorder. The environmental triad consists of studies of extreme situations such as exposure to combat and natural disasters; epidemiological research showing that overall prevalence of psychiatric disorders and, in men or women, the specific subtypes of schizophrenia, major depression, antisocial personality disorder, alcoholism, substance use disorders, and post-traumatic stress dis order (PTSD) are inversely related to socioeconomic status (SES); and a quasi-experimental investigation of the social causation-social selection issue posed by these SES differences.
