• Air pollutants were collected from 145 Chinese cities from 2014 to 2022. • “Sadness smile” curve is used for novel thermal comfort index (TCI) calculation. • North-south thermal comfort divides in China, TCI peaks in 2021. • Region-specific policies urged for PM10 and SO2 reductions. • PM2.5 and CO shifted from positive to negative TCI predictors.
