Thyme essential oil encapsulation-based management of storage pests in foods: New insights and future implications

The infestation of stored food products by pests is a major post-harvest concern, resulting in considerable qualitative and quantitative deterioration of food commodities during prolonged storage periods. Most of the synthetic chemicals used as preservatives have adverse effects on environment and are toxic to humans. In this respect, the use of plant products, especially thyme essential oil, is recognized as a safer alternative and green strategy to synthetic chemicals for controlling pests in foodsunder storage. Thyme oil is particularly preferred due to its unique blend of potent bioactive compounds, primarily thymol and carvacrol which exhibit strong antimicrobial, insecticidal and antifungal properties. These phenolic constituents disrupt the microbial cell membranes, inhibits enzymatic activity and also interferes with the essential metabolic processes eventually leading to pest mortality. It is fast acting, with a broad spectrum effects on pestsand is environmentally friendly and biodegradable. The current encapsulation technology enhances the bioactivity of thyme essential oil for use in food preservation. Although, it is very less known about the potential of thyme essential oilforinsecticidal, antifungal, and repellent activity. Based on these backgrounds, the present article provides an overview of storage pest infestations in food commodities, as well as the insecticidal, antifungal and repellent properties of thyme essential oil, bothwith and without encapsulation. Additionally, the article highlights the mode of action, efficacy, and stability of encapsulated and non-encapsulated thyme essential oilagainst the storage pests of food items. The aim is to recommend safe preservation and enhancement of the shelf-life of foods during storage through the application ofthyme essential oil at large scale.
