• Recent steady state tandem DMA measurements of cluster evaporation kinetics have been limited to temperatures or cluster sizes at which only one single molecule evaporation reaction takes place, and can hence only monitor moderate reaction rates • Here we explore the potential of transient measurements to determine faster reaction rates via time of flight methods. • Transient measurements with time resolution < 3 ms are successfully made with almost non-reacting clusters, based on a parallel plate DMA with 256 electrical detectors. • non-reactive Numerical calculations agree fairly with these measurements. Calculations for reactive clusters further show that the transient response depends sufficiently on the rate for it to me measurable by this technique
