Tolerance for Errors in Authentication of Pervasive Services

Pervasivespaces allow seamless interaction with remote and environment-integrated services. For access control and privacy, passwords have a firmly established status as the standard means for authentication. One common source of annoyance in password authentication is the rejection of logins due to errors. Security-degrading coping strategies, i.e., compromising security for convenience, are common. We propose tolerance for errors in password authentication to achieve convenience while maintaining security of authentication. Confidence on identity, gained through biometrics, is utilized to apply a controlled amount of error correction during authentication. We collected data from 28 participants over a period of one week (in total, 2520 authentication attempts). The results suggest that error tolerance allows for increased usability and convenience of password authentication without compromising security.
