• PEGylated lipid–polymer nanoparticles for azelaic acid delivery. • Optimized PALPHNs showed ∼180 nm size, low PDI, high entrapment. • Hydrogel system enabled sustained and controlled drug release. • Significantly enhanced dermal permeation and skin deposition. • Improved anti-inflammatory efficacy with good biocompatibility.
