Software defines the future perhaps more than any other discipline. This special installment of the Software Technology department celebrates 200 issues of IEEE Software and looks ahead. What major future trends can we envisage? Knowing that software technologies quickly come and go, Steve Counsell and I portray major enablers in this anniversary article. A day in the life of a programmer in 2050 provides a glimpse into the future.
