How does brushing one’s hair become agony? In a recent study, Li, Son, and colleagues genetically isolated the specific trigeminal afferents that transduce touch into pain after nerve injury, revealing a critical role for Piezo2 in driving both evoked mechanical hypersensitivity and ongoing spontaneous activity within a heterogeneous afferent ensemble.
