• Tree size shaped sugar maple water use response to atmospheric demand. • Large trees had higher sap flux and deficit with rising atmospheric demand. • Stem water in large trees declined steeply with increasing atmospheric demand. • Large trees gained more stem water as soils wetted, buffering stem deficit. • Size effects were consistent, but individual trees showed diverse responses.
