Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents play a vital role in clinical diagnostics, however conventional MRI contrast agents such as gadolinium (Gd) and iron (Fe) based contrast agents have limited functional properties by low relaxivity and potential toxicity. This study aims to develop and evaluate lanthanum strontium manganite (La1-xSrxMnO3) magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) synthesized via the citrate gel method. The synthesized MNPs characterized via XRD, TEM, EDAX, XPS, TGA-DSC, VSM and hemolytic analysis. The MNPs exhibited rhombohedral perovskite phase (R-3c space group) with crystallite sizes ranging from 17.80 to 24.77 nm. The TEM analysis revealed nearly spherical shape of the MNPs with average sizes between 22.85 and 35.55 nm. Magnetic studies of the La1-xSrxMnO3 (x = 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30 and 0.35) MNPs exhibited the super-paramagnetic behavior and the MS was found to increase progressively with higher Sr concentrations. The hemolytic analysis confirmed their favorable biocompatibility properties. The T2-weighted MRI relaxivity of the La0.80Sr0.20MnO3 MNPs exhibited a high r2 value of 125.81 mM-1 s-1, which can be attributed to their ability to induce increased local magnetic field inhomogeneities, thereby promoting efficient spin-spin relaxation and enhancing T2-weighted contrast performance. This work emphasizes that the higher Sr concentration into LSMO MNPs, especially La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 possess as a promising candidate for future biomedical imaging applications, particularly in the development of advanced MRI contrast agents.
