Tunable Reversible Ionic Liquids: Structurally Determined Property Manipulation

The tunability of silylamine reversible ionic liquid (RevIL) for use as switchable electrolytes in electrochemical applications was investigated. RevILs can have dramatic property changes when switched from a molecular liquid (ML) state to an ionic liquid-like (IL) state. This switch is reversible with the introduction of heat to the system. The properties as switchable electrolytes including conductivity and viscosity were investigated as a function of silylamine structure. As the hydrocarbon chains around the silicon atom increased in length, the conductivity decreased viscosity increased. The relationship between conductivity and viscosity for these systems was found to not follow a Walden-type relationship. These switchable electrolytes hold promise as battery electrolyte safety switches and for use as recyclable electrolytes in electrochemical reactions.
