• Dual-stream SLR design: keyword database search plus forward snowballing. • We review 40 JVMTI studies (24 database, 16 snowballing) from 2004 to 2023. • ClassFileLoadHook is the most referenced JVMTI event across the corpus. • Seven JVMTI usage scenarios, including a cross-cutting framework category. • 16 framework-based studies (40%) invisible to keyword-based search.
