• 2D hydrodynamic-Lagrangian model simulated microplastic transport in Lake Tana. • First basin-scale wind-driven circulation simulation of microplastic transport in Lake Tana. • One day, 24 hourly continuous injection dispersion studied for a month at four major tributaries. • 844 square kilometers of Lake Tana area is covered with microplastic at 30-day dispersion time. • Results provide a framework for future monitoring and model validation. .
