• Surfactant-free ultrasound-aided synthesis of MnCo2O4 nanostructures. • Synthesis of pure MnCo2O4 without surfactant with 1:1 or 2:1 ratios of Co:Mn after 15 min ultrasound. • Synthesis of pure MnCo2O4 with CTAB with 1:2 ratio of Co:Mn after 10 min ultrasound. • Study of structural characteristics by SEM images, XRD, EDS, FT-IR, VSM, and UV-Vis spectra. • Study of electronic structure of normal spinel MnCo2O4 by spin-polarized GGA + U calculations.
