Recent studies have demonstrated that the formation of the FCC (γ) phase in titanium (Ti) alloys remarkably enhances their mechanical properties. However, the intrinsic deformation mechanism in multiphases including the γ phase has remained insufficiently understood. This study reveals that the deformation of the γ phase in the as-printed α-γ dual-phase Ti-0.67O alloy is dominated by synergetic mechanisms: dislocation slip, stacking faults, and twinning. Especially, the γ phase yielded prior to the α phase during deformation. In addition, the stress concentration at the α/γ interface activates the plastic deformation of the nearby α phase at the subsequent deformation stage. This cooperative deformation behavior, associated with the ‘soft’ γ phase and the ‘hard’ α phase, contributes to excellent mechanical properties of the Ti-0.67O alloy. This study provides in-depth insights into the deformation mechanism of the α-γ dual-phase Ti-O alloys, and potentially opens avenues for the performance optimization of Ti alloys.
