Abstract

The study aims to explore the influence of supervisors’ negative workplace gossip on subordinates’ counterproductive work behaviors in addition to the role of cognitive reappraisal abilities and power distance in controlling this relationship. SmartPLS was used to analyze the data obtained through a questionnaire distributed to hotel employees. The results revealed that supervisors’ negative workplace gossip affects counterproductive work behaviors positively and cognitive reappraisal abilities negatively, and cognitive reappraisal abilities mediate the relationship between supervisors’ negative workplace gossip and subordinates’ counterproductive work behaviors. Finally, the power distance moderated the effect of supervisors’ negative workplace gossip on cognitive reappraisal abilities, and cognitive reappraisal abilities mitigated the impact of supervisors’ negative workplace gossip on subordinates’ counterproductive work behaviors. Accordingly, selecting employees with emotional regulation abilities, including cognitive reappraisal abilities, is beneficial.
