Abstract

The absorption and scattering of light are major challenges in underwater imaging. In this paper, we propose an underwater imaging method that employs randomly encoded structured light with scanning mode to enhance underwater image visibility. The backscattered light induced by the random light pattern is effectively canceled out through frame image integration along the scanning direction. The correlation between the random light pattern and the convolutional image formulates the blurred target. Finally, the deconvolution algorithm is applied to recover the target image. Our method theoretically can completely eliminate the backscatter produced during the imaging process. In our experiments, our method produces clearer target images with less noise compared to some state-of-the-art single underwater image processing methods.
