Abstract

• Conductive materials within the electrolyte lower resistance in Zn–air batteries. • Unwired bipolar electrochemistry boosts Zn–air battery power by up to 80%. • Lower overpotentials and higher limiting currents occur under bipolar operation. • Performance depend on bipolar electrode material properties and redox chemistry. • Induced anodic and cathodic poles enable new charge-transfer pathways.
