• A novel collaborative drawdown framework is proposed to boost hydropower output. • Linear links among hydropower, drawdown storage, and runoff are derived. • Drawdown storage’s contribution to hydropower is quantitatively identified. • Drawdown rules for cascade reservoirs are extracted via kernel density estimation.
