• SVUV-PIMS detects key radicals (C2H5, C3H3, aC3H5) in ethane CPO. • Coupled microkinetic model captures gas–surface chemistry interplay. • Surface dehydrogenation dominates while H-abstraction is rate-determining. • Competing oxidative cracking and coupling kinetics are quantitively revealed. • C3 radicals reveal pathway to aromatics and coke precursors.
