This study investigates the mechanism of hydrogen-induced pitting in welded lean duplex stainless steel (LDSS). Welding-induced stress and microstructural heterogeneity, especially in the weld root, significantly enhance hydrogen absorption in austenite. This leads to passive film degradation and a shift of pitting initiation from ferrite to austenite. These findings reveal the unique pitting susceptibility of the weld root in hydrogen-containing environments, highlighting the critical role of stress-assisted hydrogen absorption in hydrogen-containing environments.
