• The removal mechanisms of 11 representative EPs by NF membrane were revealed. • Mineral ions affect EPs rejection via charge screening and complexation. • Optimized pore size and enhanced interactions boost EPs/ions selectivity. • A design framework of NF membrane with higher EPs/minerals selectivity was proposed. • Surface carboxylation modification was proved to increase EPs/minerals selectivity.
