Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic (hypersensitivity) reaction that can progress rapidly and be fatal. It can affect the skin and mucous membranes, the respiratory, cardiovascular and/or digestive systems. Life-threatening anaphylaxis is characterized by involvement of the respiratory and/or cardiovascular systems and can also occur without skin/mucous membrane involvement.Anaphylaxis continues to be of great importance for pre-hospital and in-hospital emergency medical care, especially since there is currently no internationally uniform definition. Adequate and early administration of intramuscular adrenaline is crucial in light of an increasing incidence of anaphylaxis with an overall increase in the number of emergency ambulance call-outs.What is new and what has changed since the last guideline update, particularly regarding emergency medicine? This article aims to highlight the latest developments and new aspects and to underline the existing recommendations for treatment and action in cases of anaphylaxis.
