• A new size criterion for distinguishing perovskite photovoltaics was established. • Histrorical analysis of efficiency versus size stressed the importance of ongoing refinement in large-area perovskite thin-film deposition techniques. • The recommended size for commercial perovskite solar modules was 23xx to 24xx mm × 11xx to 12xx mm, taking into account the necessity to integrate with existing photovoltaic systems. • Constraints for the manufacture of 2-T tandem and additional costs in the balance of system of 4-T tandem were clarified.
