This study investigates the influence of alkaline treatment on the structural and thermokinetic properties and the distribution of pyrolysis products of cellulose nanowhiskers (CNWs) produced from Pachira aquatica peels. CNWs obtained with 2% (NP2) and 4% (NP4) sodium hydroxide exhibited crystallinity indices of 75.26% and 83.31%, respectively. Comprehensive characterization by FTIR, 2D correlation spectroscopy (2D-CoS), XRD, RAMAN, SEM, TEM, TGA and DTG demonstrated that increasing the NaOH concentration promoted hydrogen-bond reorganization and higher structural order, resulting in enhanced thermal stability. Kinetic analysis using the Friedman and DAEM methods revealed higher activation energies for NP4 (168 − 118 kJ mol-1) than for NP2 (83 − 64 kJ mol− 1), while Master Plot analysis showed that alkaline treatment modified the thermokinetic behavior without changing the pyrolysis mechanism. The machine learning (AdaBoost) model accurately predicted the thermal decomposition behavior of CNWs prepared under different synthesis conditions (R² = 0.92). Finally, Py-GC/MS demonstrated that NP4 enhances the selective formation of furfural (14.72%) and levoglucosenone (13.71%), linking structural organization to product distribution. These findings establish a comprehensive structure-property relationship between alkaline treatment, hydrogen-bond organization, crystallinity, and thermokinetic behavior, providing insights for the rational design of cellulose nanomaterials from lignocellulosic residues.
