• Invasive Parthenium hysterophorus converted into biochar via chemical-free carbonization. • Biochar produced at 800 °C shows high surface area (642.8 m2 g−1). • Maximum adsorption capacity of 627.4 mg g−1 for ciprofloxacin removal. • Adsorption follows pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm. • Adsorbent retains ∼51% capacity after ten regeneration cycles.
